American Dollar Double Eagle coin (Xia Maosheng/Guangming Daily)
The world's most valuable coin is a 1933 $20 double eagle that sold for $7.6 million in 2002. A total of 445,500 double eagles were minted in 1933. However, due to the critical shortage of gold as the Great Depression erupted, most of the coins were ordered to be melted down into gold bars, with only 13 coins left at present.
