The China-India “Icebreaking Journey”:Rajiv Gandhi Climbs the Badaling Great Wall

来源:光明网2025-05-13 08:08

In December 1988, the wheels of history etched a profound mark in the development of China-India relations. From December 19 to 23, Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, made a state visit to China. This visit was nothing short of a historic icebreaker in bilateral ties.

Looking back in history, in October 1954, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, accompanied by Premier Zhou Enlai, visited the Badaling section of the Great Wall in Yanqing District, Beijing. He became the first Indian leader to ever step onto the Badaling section of the Great Wall and the first foreign head of state ever climbing the Great Wall. Since then, Badaling has become a significant venue for diplomatic receptions in China, witnessing countless precious moments of friendly exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

On December 20th, the winter sunlight gently bathed the majestic Badaling Great Wall in a soft golden glow. Gandhi stood shoulder to shoulder with his wife Sonia, their figures blending harmoniously with the ancient Wall. A smile graced his face, and his eyes reflected deep admiration and respect for this monumental historical site.

The Great Wall, winding through the mountains like a majestic dragon, bears testament to the immense wisdom and resilience of the Chinese nation. In this historic moment, the Wall seemed to stand as a silent witness to the friendly exchanges between China and India.

In 1987, the Great Wall was among the first in China to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. As a symbol of the Chinese nation, it bears witness to countless historical transformations and friendly exchanges. As a symbol of peace, each of its bricks reflects the Chinese people’s aspirations for harmony. Prime Minister Gandhi also felt the profound message of peace embedded in the Great Wall as he ascended its steps. As ancient civilizations of Asia, China and India are strategically aligned on multiple fronts. When China and India speak with one voice, the world listens. When they join hands in cooperation, the world watches.
